An Introduction to the Black Eyed Kids

A newlywed couple is enjoying their honeymoon on a tropical island. They decide to take a romantic starlit stroll along the beach. Up ahead they notice a young girl standing in the sand. Her plain white dress stands out against the dark surroundings. She beckons them, “Please, help me!” The couple approaches asking what is wrong. She repeats, “Please, help me!” Again, the couple tries to get an answer as to what she needs help with. She offers no explanation other than she needs their help. She begins motioning for them to follow her. They walk behind her for a short while and she heads toward the ocean. The couple watches as she wanders into the water. She again calls out, “Please, help me!”

The husband and wife look at each other confused by her odd behavior. They sense something is not right. The woman says, “Stay here. We will go get help.”

“No! Please, follow me. I need your help.” The young girl pleads. As she begins to walk towards them, the moon casts a bright light upon the girl’s face, revealing a horrifying sight. Her eyes are pitch black. There’s no trace of the iris or sclera, just two onyx-like eyes gazing lifelessly at the frightened couple. The newlyweds turn around and start running toward their resort. The man looks behind to see if the girl is following but there’s no sign of her. She has simply disappeared. They continue to hustle back to the hotel and discover that the only footprints in the sand are theirs. As if this wasn’t baffling enough, they are nearly a mile away from where they originally departed. Though, they swear that they had only been walking a couple of minutes before they turned back.

This is one of my favorite stories involving a terrifying phenomenon known as the Black Eyed Kids (BEK). These creepy children have been capturing the attention of many people around the world. Reports of BEK began to surface in the 1990s. As these stories gained attention, more witnesses came forward claiming to have accounts dating back much earlier.

According to the reports, these kids show up unexpectedly requesting to be invited into a house, car, or business. In a few rare cases they have attempted to lure their prey elsewhere.

The BEK have jet black eyes and unusually pale skin. They range in ages of about 8 to 16 years old and show up alone or with 1 to 2 companions. Their clothing falls into 2 categories. The attire either consists of jeans and a hoodie, which is typically a muted color or it is described as outdated and nondescript. Some people mention that there is a foul smell surrounding them similar to that of rotting meat or sulfur.

Witnesses say they are overcome with a feeling of dread or fear when they are in the presence of Black Eyed Kids, instantly activating a fight or flight response. The BEK often speak in a monotone voice and offer very little information. They will continue to repeat the same phrases as if they have rehearsed a short script. They don’t behave like typical children would when approaching strangers. They are confident and direct. Those who have encountered the BEK say that the combination of the monotone speech and the motionless black eyes create what feels like a hypnotic state. However, the feeling of terror always seems to overcome the magnetic influence.

Another bizarre characteristic is that they seem to have an ability to read minds. There are several stories which claim that the BEK verbalized a thought the person was having. For example, a woman in Ireland reported that she was walking home late in the evening. She noticed two teenage boys standing in her small front lawn. The taller one appeared to be about 16 years old and the other around 13. She thought this was very unusual so she proceeded with caution. The two boys turned around simultaneously, as if they knew she was coming. This unnerved the woman so she slowly reached into her purse and wrapped her hand around a canister of pepper spray.

“No need for that,” The older boy said in a calm manner. “We just want to borrow your phone, Miss.”

They were both wearing hoodies and jeans. Nothing about their appearance struck her as odd until she met the stare of the younger boy. He had pitch black eyes. The ghastly sight terrified her. She felt she was in danger so she quickly made her way to her front door.

“Please, Miss.” the younger boy said from behind her. “My mother won’t be happy if she doesn’t know where we are.”

The woman felt compelled to help them, but couldn’t ignore her instinct to get to safety. She frantically searched for her keys as she approached her apartment door. She locked the door behind her and tried to gain her composure. She turned on the television to soothe her nerves. She didn’t bother to look outside to see if the sinister strangers were still lurking in her yard.

After a few minutes passed, there was a knock at the door. She ignored it, but then came another knock. She looked out the peephole to find the soulless black eyes staring her in the face. A horrid feeling of dread overwhelmed her.

“Miss, we won’t hurt you. We promise,” an adolescent voice spoke through the wooden door.

The woman was suddenly overcome with anger. She flung the door open to find the boys grinning at her.

“What do you want?” She demanded.

“We want to use your phone.” The older boy replied.

“No!” She yelled and slammed the door in their faces. The knocking ceased and the boys never returned. However, the experience created a sense of paranoia in the woman and the memories of that evening still stir up feelings of fear.

Many who encounter the Black Eyed Kids claim that they seem to vanish without a trace once you’ve made it clear you will not be accommodating their requests. A sheriff’s deputy responded to a domestic dispute. Once the matter was settled, he decided to take a few moments to fill out some paperwork in his vehicle. He noticed two young children standing on the porch of a neighboring house. It was very late and he thought it was strange for them to be outside at such an hour. He got out of his car and walked towards them asking if everything was okay.

“We want to go inside.” The young girl said in a monotone voice. She and her younger companion were dressed in old fashioned garments.

“What are you doing outside?” The deputy asked.

“We want to go inside, now.” She repeated as the little boy looked down towards his feet.

The deputy continued to probe them for more information but they offered no further details. The deputy began to think he may have a case of neglect on his hands. He knocked on the front door of the house. No one answered so he knocked harder and rang the doorbell. After a minute passed, he turned to ask the children another question. At that moment, the porch light turned on. The light shined onto the two young faces exposing their jet black eyes. This sent the deputy into a panic. The door opened and standing in front of him was an elderly woman staring at him inquisitively. He quickly looked back in the direction of the children but was stunned to find both had disappeared. This perplexed him because he was blocking the only entryway onto the porch. He tells the woman about the two children (leaving out the part about the demonic eyes) and asked her if she had grandchildren visiting. She told the deputy her grandchildren are grown and live out of state. She didn’t know who the kids could be. The deputy searched around the house with his flashlight but could not find the children.

There are many theories circulating about what these sinister entities might be. Of course, the most logical would be that these are children playing a practical joke. It’s certainly a possibility, especially in the later cases when black contacts became available to the public.

The following are some of the more unorthodox explanations:

Alien hybrids: Similar to the stereotypical gray aliens (aka: the grays), the children have over-sized black eyes. Those who have encountered the grays describe them as lacking emotion, much like the BEK.

Demons: The BEK bear a striking similarity to demons. They both are said to exude a smell of sulfur or rotting meat. The common belief is that when demons take on the guise of a person, they cannot fully replicate the human body so something is usually missing or disfigured. The saying is that the eyes are the window to the soul. If they are soulless, this could explain the hollow black eyes.

Vampires: Vampire lore suggests that these creatures cannot enter a dwelling or vehicle without an invitation. Many believe they are trying to gain entry so they can feed off the life force of their prey. Vampires also possess hypnotic abilities much like the BEK.

Djinn: The Djinn are invisible spirits mentioned in the Koran. They can be good or evil. Muslims believe the Djinn have the ability to appear in the form of humans or animals. It is believed that they can exercise supernatural influence over people. They are known to be ‘tricksters.’

Tulpas: Some believe that these terrifying entities are thought forms known as tulpas. These are created when intense concentration and emotion are invested in a belief. The result is the materialization of a physical form which then takes on a life of its own.

I was unable to locate anyone who had a firsthand account with the BEK. The stories I included were recounted by Dave Schrader: Host of Darkness Radio and Jason Offutt: Author and Paranormal Researcher.

Whatever these mysterious children are, their attentions are clearly not benevolent. I came across an article from The Syracuse Daily Journal (NY), November 17, 1903. I have included it below. This seems to be an account of someone who was lured by a mysterious woman with black eyes. The story certainly made me wonder if the surge in reports of the Black Eyed Children are more than an urban legend. Take a listen to the lyrics of Men at Work’s hit “Who Can It Be Now?” Maybe an encounter with Black Eyed Kids was the inspiration. *Wink*

If you’ve had a mysterious encounter or would like to suggest a topic for a future article, feel free to send it my way. Weirdness is always welcome here at Mysteries over Martinis.
